On April 5, 2023, the USPS released the Tulip Blossoms Forever stamps in Woodburn, Oregon, coinciding with the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival. This stamp series celebrates the vibrant beauty of tulips, featuring close-up photographs of 10 different tulip varieties in a spectrum of colors, including yellow, orange, pink, green, and violet. Each stamp showcases a single tulip blossom filling almost the entire frame, with just the top of the stem visible.
The photographs were taken by Denise Ippolito, who captured these images in gardens and parks during her travels. Art director Greg Breeding designed the stamps using Ippolito’s existing photographs.
Tulips, members of the lily family (Liliaceae), originated as wildflowers in Central Asia. They were cultivated in 10th-century Persia and became popular in 16th-century Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey). The name “tulip” derives from a Turkish version of the Persian word for “turban,” referencing the flower’s shape. Dutch immigrants brought tulip bulbs to America, and today, the United States imports over 1 billion bulbs annually.
