The 2016 “Songbirds in Snow” Forever Stamps were issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS) on August 4, 2016, during the American Philatelic Society’s StampShow in Portland, Oregon. This set celebrates four songbirds that brighten winter days:
.Golden-crowned Kinglet (Regulus satrapa): A tiny bird, slightly larger than a hummingbird, capable of surviving extreme cold by roosting in evergreen forests and huddling together in small flocks.
.Cedar Waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum): Named for its preference for cedar berries, this bird thrives on a fruit-based diet, including juniper, mistletoe, and crabapple.
.Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis): Recognizable by its bright red plumage, the cardinal is a frequent visitor to birdfeeders during winter, favoring sunflower seeds.
.Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis): Known for its distinctive call and behavior of caching conifer seeds in tree bark, this bird often visits feeders for sunflower seeds, peanuts, and suet.Illustrator Robert Giusti painted the original designs in acrylic on canvas board, depicting each bird perched on a snow-covered branch. The stamps were designed by art director Derry Noyes.
